Gemini 4 Carbon is not a released model. It is the internal codename of a new Gemini 4 version that Google employees are reportedly testing on Jetski, Google's internal coding platform, according to a Business Insider report by Hugh Langley published October 9, 2026. One employee said it “feels like Opus 5.5” for coding. Google declined to comment; there is no announcement, release date, pricing or public benchmark.

What was reported
- Employees have been testing a new version of Gemini 4 internally named Carbon, according to documents and screenshots seen by Business Insider. It was made available inside Jetski, Google's internal coding platform, “in recent days”.
- Carbon is possibly a new update (a “checkpoint”) of Gemini 4 Argon, the frontier model Google announced on September 30, 2026. Business Insider could not determine whether Carbon will ship as an update under the Argon name or as a different Gemini 4 model.
- An internal document shows Google has tested a series of Gemini 4 models named Argon, Barium and Carbon. Internal codenames don't match public names: the internal “Barium-B” model was chosen to become the public Argon.
- One employee told Business Insider Carbon “feels like Opus 5.5” for coding (Anthropic's top model for long-running agentic coding), caveating that it needs more testing. Others in internal channels wrote “Carbon is really good!” and “Feels comparable to Opus 5.5.” One employee said early Argon versions felt behind on some coding tasks, closer to the older Claude Opus 5.
- Google is not guaranteed to release these updates. Google declined to comment.
What we know / what we don't know
✓ What we know
- Business Insider reports Carbon exists as an internal Gemini 4 version on Jetski (Oct 9, 2026).
- The Opus 5.5 comparison is employee impressions quoted by Business Insider, not a measured result.
- Gemini 4 Argon is officially announced (Sep 30, 2026) and rolling out first to trusted cyber defenders in Google's Fairwind Program, then paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers.
- Google's stated Argon introductory API price is $2 / $10 per million input / output tokens.
? What we don't know
- Whether Carbon will ever ship, and under what public name (it may be folded into Argon).
- Any release date for Carbon — or a firm general-availability date for Argon.
- Carbon pricing, context window or limits.
- Any public or independent benchmark. Social posts claiming it “beats Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra” go beyond what Business Insider reported.
- Which coding tools will offer it, and when.
Gemini 4 Carbon release date
None has been announced. Google declined to comment to Business Insider, which also reported Google is not guaranteed to release these updates. The closest official timeline is for Gemini 4 Argon: announced September 30, 2026, rolling out first to trusted cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program, then to paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers — “rolling out soon”, without a date (Google). If Carbon becomes an Argon update, it could arrive under the Argon name rather than as “Carbon”.
Gemini 4 Carbon vs Claude Opus 5.5 (and GPT-6 Astra)
There is no head-to-head data. The comparison is employee impressions — “feels like Opus 5.5” for coding, with a caveat that it needs more testing. Viral posts saying Carbon beats Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra internally are not in the Business Insider report we could verify.
For context, the current public bar for coding agents: on Terminal-Bench 4.0, Claude Code with Opus 5.5 scores 64.8% and OpenAI Codex with GPT-6 Astra scores 58.2% (see benchmarks). Google said Argon is “comparable to frontier models like Astra and Opus on key coding and cyber benchmarks” (Reuters); Carbon has no published score at all. Treat any number you see for Carbon as unverified.
Argon, Barium, Carbon: the codenames

What it means for AI coding agents
Business Insider frames Carbon as part of Google's push to catch up in AI coding agents, where Anthropic and OpenAI have pulled ahead with developers. If a Carbon-class model ships, these are the tools in our directory that already run Gemini models and would be the obvious places to see it — but none has announced Carbon support, and availability would depend on Google releasing it:
Google's own agents
- Google Antigravity — Google Gemini models (plus a selection of other agent models — check site).
- Jules — Google Gemini models (Gemini 3 Pro on paid tiers).
Multi-model tools that list Gemini
- GitHub Copilot — Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini, xAI Grok, Microsoft and Kimi models (varies by plan and feature).
- Zed — Zed-hosted models, or your own keys (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Bedrock, Ollama, OpenRouter and more); external agents via ACP.
- Factory (Droids) — All leading frontier and open-weight models (GPT, Claude, Gemini and more).
- Devin — Cognition's SWE models plus frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and SpaceXAI.
Bring-your-own-key agents
- Cline — Any provider via your own API keys, plus local models.
- Kilo Code — Any AI model: BYOK, local models, or the pay-as-you-go Kilo Gateway.
- OpenCode — 75+ providers via Models.dev, local models, plus login with GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT Plus/Pro.
- Aider — Almost any LLM via API keys, including local models.
Practical takeaway: don't switch tools on a rumor. If you're choosing today, compare on public data with our compare tool or the recommender; a model-agnostic agent keeps your options open if Google ships a stronger Gemini.
