What is an AI coding agent?
An AI coding agent is software that takes a goal in plain language and works in a loop — reading your repository, planning, editing files, running commands and tests, and fixing its own mistakes — until the task is complete or it needs your decision.
Autocomplete predicts the next few tokens. An agent owns a task: “add dark mode to settings”, “upgrade to Next.js 15”, “fix this failing test”. You stay in charge by approving risky commands and reviewing the diff.

Business Insider reports Google employees are testing a newer Gemini 4 version codenamed Carbon on Jetski, Google's internal coding platform; one employee said it “feels like Opus 5.5” for coding but needs more testing.
